DSL entails Telkom splitting the data and voice channels on your telephone line. A DSLAM that operates in a similar fashion as a modem is deployed in the exchange and kitted out with port cards which are linked to your telephone service. A filter is connected to your telephone plug to filter out the noise between the data and voice channels on your line. The modem is connected to the telephone plug and the telephone to the filter. Your PC needs to be connected to the modem via an Ethernet cable or USB cable should you prefer a USB modem.

The provision of Telkom's DSL is subject to network availability, distance, copper quality and line sync speed limitations.
DSL is an access medium to the Internet or your preferred ISP and will not overcome any bandwidth related constraints within the World Wide Web.
The Telkom modems are covered by a 12-month carry in guarantee unless it forms part of a 24-month bundled contract in which instance it will be covered by a 24-month carry in guarantee. The above guarantee will only be honored by Telkom provided that the modem and all its components are returned.

The DSL Up to 4096/10016kbps service has 4 sub-profiles, which are used to stabilize customers' service that experience re-synchs (service interruptions) on their ADSL lines due to last mile distance, noise and attenuation. Therefore customers that experience problems on the service may be accommodated on any of the secondary profiles below:

What the above entails is that if a customer does not sync at the profile listed in A above they will be accommodated on B, C or D depending on the line sync speed.
Customers will automatically be upgraded to the highest speed possible on the service that they applied for as per the profiles above. Where the DSL service is unable to connect (sync) at the speed applied for due to factors such as line length or quality will be accommodated down from the service applied for in 32 kbps decrements, but not lower than the minimum download speed, until the service connects (sync's successfully).
Once a customer's line syncs at a certain rate and at a later stage the line degrades the service will also be accommodated down in 32kbps decrements until sync is re-established, the downward synchronization due to line quality will happen automatically within the profile parameters.
There are certain areas that may synch up to 10 Mbps speeds. Further synch profiles are provided below:
An ADSL service shall be deemed to be in good working order until the customer advises Telkom otherwise.
The customer shall be entitled to a credit on the rental amount payable for the service, pro rata to the duration of the interruption if the ADSL service has been completely unavailable for a continuous period of at least twenty four (24) hours. The credit shall exclude rental for the twenty four (24) hour period. The rental credit will be calculated and passed programmatically on the customer's account.
If Telkom determines that the fault reported by the customer was caused by subscriber equipment which is not covered by a maintenance agreement with Telkom, the customer shall be liable for payment of the relevant call-out charge as determined by Telkom from time to time.
Customers downgrading from an existing DSL service not on a 24-month contract can opt for any DSL Bundle, and receive a free modem of choice, subject to the signing of a 24 months DSL Bundle Contractual Agreement.
Existing bundle customers can up or downgrade once in a 24 month period and receive a free modem without paying penalties or migration fees.
The South African Internet eXchange (SAIX) provides Internet accounts for DSL to Internet Service Providers(ISP's) and Internet Providers(IP's). These accounts can be purchased by the ISP's in with predefined characteristics or in bulk which they in turn customize and apply various capping and shaping protocols to that govern the usage thereof. Before you subscribe to an Internet account powered by DSL please ensure that you are aware of the various rules that govern the accounts. Accounts can come in the shape of 1,2,3 or 4Gigabyte usage with or without out of bundle per megabyte offerings. Some ISP's provide Internet accounts smaller than 1GB.
The Bundled offering is subject to all of the above terms and conditions as well as the following conditions:
If the customer cancels the service before the 24-month contractual agreement period has lapsed, the customer will be penalized according to a sliding scale for early cancellation penalties, which is equal to R62.19 VAT excl multiplied by the outstanding months of the contract which will be levied on the customers final account.
Whenever a new DSL Bundle Contractual Agreement is entered into, the customer will receive a new FREE WiFi modem with 4 Ethernet ports while stocks last. Customers that prefer a USB modem can opt for one instead of the WiFi modem if available.
Customers subscribed to the 24 month DSL bundled offering remain liable for the penalty under the following conditions:

Where a customer opts to transfer his service and retain the DSL bundle, and Telkom is able to perform the transfer without a number change the customer's Contractual Agreement will not be affected, thus no penalty will apply.

Customers that are unable to do the self installation can contact the DSL helpdesk at 0800 375375. Customers that are unsuccessful with the SIO and still want the service can opt for Telkom technician install, sign a 24-month contract and still receive the modem free of charge but will be liable to pay the R627.63 VAT incl installation fee. Only one (1) free modem per DSL order. The installation fee is payable if a Telkom technician or Telkom appointed contractor is required to complete the installation. An installation is deemed completed once the customers modem is installed and the service is demonstrated to be in working order on the technicians test equipment. Telkom technicians are not required to install the customers personal computer but will demonstrate that the service is working on a test laptop or similar equipment.
Telkom shall publish updated information on ADSL-enabled exchanges in the white pages of the telephone directory or electronic directory. Telkom is in full compliance with this requirement as customers can access Telkom's exchange checker on the Telkom website found by clicking on the Exchange Checker click through above.
The regulation further requires the presentation of key performance indicators comprising of at least Packet Losses, Average Latency and Jitter for the ADSL service as a commitment to good business practice which is illustrated by the graphs below:
